Gas log installation should only be done by a certified professional. Homeowners should never install their own gas fireplace units. Vented logs must only be installed in a fireplace with a functional chimney and must only be burned with the damper open. Vented log installations may require no additional venting components when installed in an existing fireplace with a functional chimney. Vent free gas logs can be installed in a fireplace that does not have a working chimney flue and can be operated in a fireplace with the damper closed. Vent free logs draw air from the room for combustion and also vent back into the room. They must be installed in well ventilated areas and not in any confined spaces. Low BTU units are approved for bedroom installations where state and local codes allow. Please check your local and state codes. Vent free units are not recommended for persons with allergies or other respiratory issues. Please consult your doctor prior to purchasing if you or a family member has any pre existing condition. Gas logs need to be positioned according to the manufacturer's specifications.

You should not change how the logs are arranged on the burner. This applies specifically to direct vent and vent free logs. Some adjustments can be made with vented gas logs (requires working masonry chimney flue).
